Increased Wastewater Pumping Capacity Needed At Sewage Pump Station In Sandy Hook Center
The sewage pump station located at 5-A Glen Road in Sandy Hook Center needs expanded wastewater pumping capacity, Fred Hurley, town Public Works director, told Water & Sewer Authority (WSA) members at an April 12 meeting.
The pump station is located in a small masonry building set well back from the street along the west side of Glen Road. It is one of four such pump stations that are used by the central municipal sanitary sewer system.
The other pump stations are located on Hanover Road, Taunton Lake Drive, and Baldwin Road.
Due to the varied topography of the sewer district, there are gravity-powered sewers and pressurized sewers. Gravity sewers allow wastewater to drain downward to pump stations where the wastewater is pressurized and then directed upward via force mains to the sewage treatment plant at Commerce Road.
Mr Hurley said that Fuss & O'Neill, Inc, the town's consulting engineering firm, will be submitting a detailed study to the WSA on how to increase the Sandy Hook Center pump station's capacity through technical means, such as installing new equipment to handle higher wastewater flows.
Mr Hurley said that pump station improvements are required to handle increased wastewater flows that would be produced by projects such as the proposed 74-unit Riverwalk multifamily complex 10-22 Washington Avenue, and the proposed Hunters Ridge multifamily complex at 79 Church Hill Road.
The engineering study to be prepared at a cost of $4,370 will address topics including hydraulics calculations, a review of data on extreme wastewater flow events, pump performance data, and how to best reduce peak wastewater flows to the Sandy Hook pump station.
An engineering study will be done to determine how the sewage pump station at 5-A Glen Road can increase its capacity.
