Newtown High School's baseball team earned back-to-back 4-2 triumphs, defeating visiting Staples of Westport on April 16 and host Pomperaug of Southbury two days later, then beat visiting Immaculate of Danbury 8-5 on April 20 to improve to 5-3 overall.

In their two previous games, the Nighthawks clawed back from three runs down to edge visiting Notre Dame-Fairfield 4-3 on April 13, and dropped a 9-0 decision at Masuk of Monroe on April 15.

Against Notre Dame, Dan Pearson had the go-ahead run-scoring single in the sixth inning. Sam Czel, Connor Barrett, and Robert Lombardo also drove in runs. Czel had two of Newtown's four stolen bases.

"It was a good team win and a good comeback win," Newtown Coach Matt Memoli said.

Pitcher Jason Hebner allowed only one hit and no runs in 32/3 innings of work for the win.

Against Masuk, Newtown committed five errors and surrendered ten hits. Short stop Jack Procaccini made a diving catch in the game. The team's most lopsided defeat of the campaign left it hungry for a turnaround but with a tall order ahead: A clash with a Staples of Westport team that Memoli noted had a top-five state ranking.

"We came out pretty determined against Staples," the coach said. "We knew we had to come to play."

Hebner pitched solidly, again, to give the Nighthawks a good chance. He allowed four hits and five walks, striking out eight batters along the way. Down 2-0 in the fourth - because of a pair of unearned runs - Newtown scored three times to claim the lead.

Barrett and Mason Melillo both had two hits. Barrett, Lucas O'Brien, and Pearson all drove in runs in the game. Czel had Newtown's lone extra base hit, a double, and scored a run.

Against Pomperaug, Austin Kasbarian tossed 52/3 strong innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Andrew Ross led the relief efforts with 11/3 innings of hitless work.

The Hawks took a 4-0 lead with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Jake Oliger had a hit and two RBI, and Barrett had two hits and drove in a run. Pearson also had two hits, and scored a run, as Newtown collected a dozen hits. Ten Nighthawk players reached on hits in this game.

In the Immaculate game, Barrett and Pearson both knocked in two runs. Pearson doubled, and Procaccini and Czel had triples.

"We know we have a talented team," said Memoli, adding that it's good to see his lineup play to its potential.
