WADSWORTH ATHENEUM PRESENTS ‘AMERICAN BEACH FASHIONS’

AVV 4-15 #733004

HARTFORD, CONN. — The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art presents “Making a Splash: American Beach Fashions, 1850–1920,” on view through July 13.

“Making a Splash” can be viewed alone or, as a complement to the exhibition “Impressionists by the Sea.” The exhibition combines original costumes with period photographs and prints to present a comprehensive display of fashions worn at the American seaside in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Viewers will be able to learn about the roots of the American bathing costume as it was first conceived for water cures and private exercise and explore the rising popularity of the beach as a setting for relaxation, public recreation and boardwalk promenades of the latest fashions.

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is at 600 Main Street. For more information, www.wadsworthatheneum.org or 860-278-2670.
