Super Hero-Plus

To the Editor:

How nice to pick up my copy of The Bee and see the article about Karlyn Sturmer and her activities with cats, especially her hard work with animals in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina (Improving the Chances of a Cat’s Nine Lives, The Bee, April 14, 2006).

Anyone who does animal rescue work is a hero in my eyes. Anyone who works to help solve the problems of homeless cats using TNR (trap, neuter, return) in which animals are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, and either adopted out if they are tame or returned to managed colonies overseen by volunteers if they are feral, is a super hero. Locally, I’m glad to see TNR practiced so successfully by The Animal Center, where Karlyn volunteers.

I don’t know what is greater than a super hero but it would have to be someone who goes down and rescues those post Katrina homeless animals facing a lingering death in New Orleans. Thanks for The Bee article, thanks to Karlyn and her well deserved Red Cross award, and thanks to The Animal Center and Spay & Neuter Association for helping the homeless cats in this community.
