Mary Coons

Longtime Resident Known For Kindness And Humor

Mary Coons, 99, a resident of Oak View Road, Sandy Hook for more than 56 years, died April 12 in River Glen Health Care Center, Southbury. Mrs Coons was the wife of the late Carroll Coons, who died in 1967.

She was born in Mystic on February 28, 1907, a daughter of John and Olena (Krynitski) Boyko. Mrs Coons was the eldest of seven sisters and a brother. She was employed by the state of Connecticut at Fairfield Hills Hospital for 38 years. After a brief retirement, Mary went to work in the cafeterias of the Newtown School System until the age of 80.

For many years, Mrs Coons was an active member of St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook.

Mrs Coons was a quiet, honest, and reserved woman who enjoyed a simple life and worried about everyone but herself. She was an avid reader and enjoyed having pets. All who knew her will remember her kindness and sense of humor. She lived her life the way she saw fit and pursued an active, healthy life well into her 90s, when she finally gave up her car keys.

Survivors include her son, Allan Boyko Coons, of Rotterdam, N.Y.; two sisters, Catherine Zuraw of Shelton and Elizabeth Boyko of Newington; three nephews, two nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held April 17 in St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook. Interment followed in Zoar Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Honan Funeral Home in Newtown.
