Bridgeport — Bridgeport Hospital’s geriatric specialty services are the focus of the Spring 2006 cover story of Healthy & Wise, the hospital’s award-winning community health newsletter.

The cover story discusses the experiences of an 81-year-old local woman who required specialized care after developing mental and physical problems. Her adult son turned to Bridgeport Hospital Chief of Geriatrics Beata Skudlarska, MD, who conducted a comprehensive geriatric assessment of the woman and helped map out a plan of care.

The plan included a short stay in the hospital’s Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, where the assessment continued and assistance was provided in placing the woman in a local nursing home.

Healthy & Wise also includes an articles about Bridgeport Hospital’s Geriatric Home Visit Group, which provides care to older homebound patients who cannot visit a doctor’s office, and an “Ask the Expert” column by William Butler, MD, of Bridgeport Hospital’s Wound Healing Center of Fairfield County about preventing and treating pressure ulcers.
