Don't Forget To Vote
Donât Forget To Vote
To the Editor:
On Tuesday, April 25, Newtown will vote on the school and town budget referendum. This is the budget that will go into effect July 1, 2006, for one year and will include everything from teachers, school utility expenses and portable classrooms in the school district to road maintenance, park and recreation programs and fire trucks for the town.
Last year only one in four citizens voted in the budget referendum! Please make this the year that you and your spouse go to the Newtown Middle School on Queen Street and cast your vote between the hours of 6 am and 8 pm on Tuesday, April 25â¦the Tuesday after April vacation. It only takes few minutes to vote and the kids love to see how itâs done⦠consider it a lesson in the democratic privilege that we all share. Parking is available on the north and south side of the middle school.
If you are unable to attend the vote, absentee ballots may be completed on Saturday, April 22, 9 am to noon at the town clerkâs office at Edmond Town Hall. The town clerkâs office is also open weekdays. An application for an absentee ballot can be downloaded off the website www.newtown-ct.gov/Public_Documents/NewtownCT_Registrar/index and can be faxed and/or mailed in to the town clerk.
Further budget details are available in The Bee as well as on the town and school websites.
If you are a registered voter, you can vote in the referendum. But you may also vote if you are not registered, as long as you are a US citizen, 18 years of age or older and a property owner of $1,000 or more in property and so listed in Newtown records prior to October 1, 2005.
Thank you in advance for participating in this important event!! Mark your calendars today, and remember, an involved parent is an informed parent!
Â
Sincerely,
Sarah Beier
