Edward George Atkinson, 90, passed away on April 12, 2022, at his current residence in Southbury, surrounded by family members. The 57-year resident of Newtown was the devoted husband of Marilyn (Erb) Atkinson.

In addition to Marilyn, he is survived by three sons and a daughter: Mark Atkinson and wife Teresa of New Milford; Keith Atkinson and wife Susan of Southbury; Eric Atkinson and wife Jennifer of Southbury; and Nancy Devore of Torrington. He was predeceased by his son Glenn Atkinson of Newtown. Edward also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Ed was born on July 17, 1931, in Prospect Park, N.J., the second of three children and only son of the late Edward F. Atkinson, and the late Evelyn Moore Atkinson. He leaves behind his two sisters, Evelyn Williams and Susan Clark, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Hawthorne, N.J., he graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1949 and then went on to graduate from Lehigh University in 1953 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Edward then went on to serve in the US Coast Guard as a Lieutenant and Commanding Officer of the CGC Tamaroa, having been awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

After his service in the Coast Guard, Ed worked for his father’s business, the Jacob Walder Company in Patterson, N.J. He then went on to work for Union Carbide before moving on to Fiberite Corporation, where he spent the remainder of his career, retiring in 1993.

After his retirement, Ed enjoyed many years of tennis, golf, and skiing with family and friends and continued to enjoy his love of classical music, attending many concerts over the years. A yearly highlight for Ed was spending summers with his wife, children, and grandchildren in Westport, Massachusetts, where he made lifelong friends and enjoyed spending time on and near the water.

Ed will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend, as well as a gentleman. “Pa” will be greatly missed. A private celebration of Edward’s life was held at Newtown Meeting House with immediate family.
