Harold T. Wefer, 100, of Southbury, and a resident of Smithtown, N.Y., from 1960 to 1989, as well as a former Ormond Beach, Fla., resident, died peacefully April 14 with his elder son by his side. He was born March 1, 1916, in Queens, N.Y.

Three children and their spouses, John and Elizabeth Wefer of Newtown, Mary (Wefer) and David White of Chestertown, Md., and Harold S. and Roberta Wefer of Smithtown; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren survive Mr Wefer. He was preceded in death by Helen (Brenia) Wefer, his wife of 73 years.

In January 1938, Mr Wefer joined the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and served with Engine Company 76. In 1944, during World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy and volunteered for minesweeper duty. After his 1946 discharge at the end of the war, he returned to FDNY and Engine Co. 76. In 1947, he was transferred to Engine Co. 22, where he served until 1958. In 1958 he was promoted to lieutenant. He retired from FDNY in 1959 and worked for the fire department of Republic Aviation Corporation in Farmingdale, N.Y., until its closing in 1965. He subsequently worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement in 1989.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr Wefer enjoyed fishing, clamming, canoeing, swimming, hiking, and cycling. He was adept at many crafts, including embroidery, rug hooking, and woodcarving, and was also an excellent cook.

Family and friends joined Mr Wefer in March for a joyous celebration of his 100th birthday.

A memorial service is planned for early summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Holy Dormition Byzantine Catholic Church, 17 Buckskin Lane, Ormond Beach FLA 32174.
