Boys’ Track And Field Team Shines In First Meet Of Spring

Newtown High School’s boys’ outdoor track and field team had its first meet of the season on April 9. The Nighthawks defeated Brookfield 97-43 and Barlow 98-47, and fell 79-71 in a close one with Weston.

Elias Brady nearly broke the school record in the triple jump and was a triple event winner in the 4x100, long jump, and triple jump. Newtown had several personal bests, including Orion Lowery in the 3200. Derek Jopp won the 300 hurdles. Guilhereme Magalhaes won the discus, Owen Sullivan was first in the high jump, and Jayden Taylor was first in the 100 hurdles.

“The boys were really supportive of their teammates and are doing a great job in practice each day. The coaches are very proud of the boys team and are looking forward to more great performances,” Newtown Coach Nick Fraticelli said.

In the 100 meters James D’Amico was third in a time of 11.8 seconds. Jayden Taylor tied for second in the 200 in 23.8. In the 400 D’Amico was third in 54.5 and Ny’Cere Patterson came in fourth in 55.2. Ubay Dissa took fourth in the 800 in 2:12.2 and was second in the 1600 clocking in at 4:45.3; Mitchell Greenhaw placed fifth in the 1600 in 4:58.9. Lowery was second in the 3200 in 9:59.2; Greenhaw placed fifth in the 3200 in 11:25.4.

In the 110 hurdles Taylor was first in 16.2, Jopp second in 18.6, and Mauricio De La Garza fourth in 19.9. Jopp’s winning 300 hurdles time was 44.7.

The 4x100 relay of Brady, Noah Kooper, Danniel Teixeira, and Justyn Gonzalez was first in 44.7. The 4x400 relay comprising Dissa, Lowery, Manuel Guinea Oviedo, and Quinn Velez took third in 3:48.4. Newtown’s 4x800 team of Mark Caratas, Sebastian Colburn, Bryce Taylor, and Nick Oliveria was third in 9:42.5.

In the shot-put event Guilherme Magalhaes came in second with a 35-8. Magalhaes won the discus throw with a 110-8. Tanner Smith placed fourth in the javelin event with a 117-7. In the high jump Sullivan cleared the bar at 5-foot-8 for the top spot and Velez came in fourth clearing 5 feet. In the long jump Brady’s winning leap was 21-5, Sullivan came in second with a jump of 20 feet, Gonzalez was fourth with a 19-3, and Smith fifth jumping 19-2. Brady won the triple jump with a 44-0 and Gonzalez placed third in the triple jump with a 37-1.
