The Top Of The Mountain
We were thrilled to get a note from Daniela Delgado last Friday, saying that some car troubles may be over for her family. Daniela had reached out to the paper last week, asking for “a good Samaritan” to help the young cake-baker. The family car was not working, and needed not only for her to deliver her cakes to ill children, but so that she could get to her own doctor appointments. Of course, Newtown came through, immediately for her! On April 12, she wrote to us, “Thank you so much for your big big help!! Without your support we never could reach an amazing human being. The owner of Berkshire Motors contacted my dad and they will pick the car up and will see what is the problem with it. It was a surprise to my parents who neither they knew about this. They are so grateful with you and the support of The Newtown Bee!! We are excited and happy to see if is just a minor damage and they can fix it. Once again, thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts! You made our day.”
Looks like someone gets the Good Egg Award this week... Berkshire Motors, you can pin this one to your wall! What a beautiful gesture.
A huge congratulations to the NMS/Reed math team! The Reed Intermediate School and Newtown Middle School math team, co-coached by Reed teacher John Sicbaldi and NMS teacher Elizabeth Stevens, earned first place in the final meet of the season, held on April 10 at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan. There are 36 students on the team, which participated in five meets throughout the season. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students are on the team. A trophy honoring the team’s first place win will be shared and put on display at NMS and Reed.
It’s ice cream season, and I could tell by the lines at Holy Cow Ice Cream Shop this past weekend that the Church Hill Road shop is full speed ahead since its April 5 opening date. I see, too, that Ferris Acres Creamery on Route 302 has a contest underway: Name the newest flavor. It’s vanilla ice cream with fudge swirls and pieces of Nestle Crunch candy bar. The winner receives a new Creamery water bottle with a gift card inside. See the Creamery’s Facebook page — or stop by with your suggestion.

*Eastbound Exit 9 off-ramp: Take exit 10, and follow the Route 25 detour.
*Eastbound Exit 9 on-ramp: Follow Route 25 and take the Exit 10 on-ramp.”
The Newtown Bee is seeking resident input through Twitter. Once a week, we will post a question to our Twitter account (@TheNewtownBee) with the hashtag #TellTheNewtownBee. In the next week’s print edition, the top five responses will be featured. Sign in to Twitter, respond using #TellTheNewtownBee in the Tweet, and check the paper weekly to read the replies.
If tweeting is not your thing, but you have opinions to share, consider joining the Community Buzz. The Bee is hoping to host one-hour conversations on a semi regular basis, with a group of five or six different residents each time. Just one question will be posed at each Buzz, selected by our news staff, and the hour will be moderated by a staff member of The Newtown Bee. Questions will cover a variety of subjects, and we’re not seeking experts, necessarily. For more information, if you are interested, e-mail editor@thebee.com, subject line Community Buzz. Please include your daytime phone number and an e-mail address.
The series on ancestry has been well-received, and we are happy to follow up on the stories of others who may have dug into the family DNA. Contact alissa@thebee.com if you have a story to share — and don’t forget about your pets. Have you found out about your pet’s ancestry? We want to know Fluffy and Fido’s secrets!
While I’m touting all things Newtown Bee, may I remind you that if you like crosswords and Sudoku, we offer the online versions at newtownbee.com —just choose Games under our “Living” tab.
We all bowed our heads in unity with the people of France on Monday upon hearing of the devastating fire at the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. As crowds watched in horror, the huge conflagration toppled the beautiful spire and ravaged sections of the 13th Century roof; the towers and facade were spared to some extent. No specific cause of the fire is yet known, though it is rumored that the fire was related to ongoing renovations. Tens of thousands of tourists visit Notre Dame every week.
Join Newtown Environmental Action Team (NEAT) members in cleaning up the area around the Exit 9 commuter lot this Saturday, from 9 to 11 am. Gloves and bags will be provided. Call 203-364-6452 for information.
A reminder that the Connecticut DOT “Don’t Get BUSted” program is underway. The pilot program is focused on combatting distracted driving near school bus stops. According to a Connecticut DOT release “The program, in conjunction with law enforcement and school superintendents of Bethel, Monroe, and Newtown, will focus on enforcing distracted driving laws during school bus pick up and drop off times throughout the month. The enforcement will extend along Route 25 from the border of Monroe up to the center of Newtown. Enforcement will also occur along the entire stretch of Route 302 in both Newtown and Bethel.” Don’t be a scofflaw; fines are $150 for the first offense, $300 for the second offense, and $500 for the third and subsequent offenses.
Thank you to all who walk dogs at Fairfield Hills and use the litter bags provided to rid the area of doggie-doodoo. Using the bags means that other walkers will not walk away with anything they don’t care for on their shoes. Just a point to make, though: the filled bags are not meant to be left behind! Town workers do not scour Fairfield Hills for the used bags. Please deposit any filled bags in the garbage receptacles.
“Thank you for your service, Ms Victoria.” Who was the Newtown Police Department referring to, and for what service? The Facebook post was showing gratitude toward Car No. 17, the “last of our Crown Vics.” The police car was sold this week, ending the era of Ford Crown Victorias for our local PD.
