Softball Team Drops Games Against Tough Nonconference Foes
Newtown High School’s softball team lost a trio of contests with competitive nonconference squads after a season-opening win over FCIAC representative Trumbull. The Nighthawks saw visiting Fairfield Warde (also of the FCIAC) pull away late in a 7-2 decision on April 10. Newtown traveled to Southern Connecticut Conference foe Cheshire the next day for a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal-round game won by Cheshire, and fell 10-7. Then came a 4-0 shutout defeat at FCIAC team St Joseph of Trumbull on April 14.
Against Warde, Gillian Boughan had a great day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run batted in; and Maddie Thoesen, Reagan Schenzer, and Olivia Doersch all had singles. Patience at the plate led to several walks to keep the pressure on Warde throughout the afternoon.
At Cheshire, the bottom of the lineup stood out. Gabby Ansman went 3-for-4 with four RBI; Doersch went 2-for-3 with a walk; Thoesen had two hits and an RBI; Elena Burdo drove in a run. Schenzer, Boughan, and Lila Accousti all recorded hits. Thoesen pitched well in the game.
In the St Joes game Thoesen, Boughan, and Evelynn Schoen recorded hits, with Schoen logging her first varsity hit. Addy Cordova was strong in the pitcher’s circle.
