Northeast Utilities Foundation Creates
Scholarships For Teacher Education
STORRS â A $330,000 gift from the Northeast Utilities Foundation to the University of Connecticutâs Neag School of Education will provide scholarships for students enrolling in this Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates. The full-time masterâs degree program is being offered for the first time at UConnâs Stamford campus.
Richard Schwab, dean of the Neag School, announced that 30 Northeast Utilities Foundation scholarships will be awarded during the next three years to individuals interested in becoming secondary teachers in Fairfield Countyâs critical need areas, which include math, science, foreign language, and special education.
âThis generous gift from the Northeast Utilities Foundation is another example of how this foundation steps up to fulfill a need within the communities it serves,â Mr Schwab said. âThese scholarships will provide funds for those who have a passion for teaching, but for economic reasons ââ weather it is loss of a job or inability to afford tuition ââ would not be able to become a teacher.â
Beginning May 19, the first group of Northeast Utilities Scholars will spend the summer immersed in two semesters of coursework. During the fall semester they will teach while taking additional courses in their content area. Next spring, they return to the classroom for another clinical experience while completing advanced work in curriculum and conducting an inquiry project.
Applications for the scholarship are now being accepted. More information can be found at www.education.uconn.edu/ admissions.
