NHS Fair Fosters Health Awareness And Fitness

Newtown High School students took part in the Health Fair at the high school April 9. The fair’s theme was wellness centering on physical fitness, nutrition, and accident prevention. Students were able to sample healthy snacks, food tasting, and participate in physical fitness demonstrations and other health/wellness presentations.

The fair was organized by The Health Career Club, Career Center, Physical Education Department, NYCAAP, health coordinator, high school nurses, Newtown Food Services, and the Newtown Health Department. Students participated from 9 am to 1 pm. The fair was held in the high school lobby, gymnasium, and cafeteria.

Sean Reilly was intrigued with how the drinking assimilation goggles made him waiver back and forth as he tried to walk a straight line.

“I thought it was really tricky. When you looked down your feet didn’t even look like your own feet,” Sean said. “I would never want to be caught walking like that by a real cop. This is a good idea, especially in school.”

Athletic trainer Tim Crowley hoped his demonstration would encourage students to want to look into the field or any related profession. He sat on a table with his legs out and numbered asking participates to identify bones, muscles, ligaments, and cartilage.

“I assess injuries,” Mr Crowley said. “Make sure students get the right treatments.”

Presentations  included target heart rate, BMI, pedometers, yoga, kickboxing, pet therapy, team rehab, trainer, massage therapy, Newtown Police Department with assimilated drinking goggles, nutrition, accident prevention, jeopardy game AHEC, Lyme disease and ticks, drug information, NYCAPP and NO SUDS, career information, Alzheimer’s Association Memory Game, and nutrition.

The events organizers wish to thank Kathy Davey, Laura McLean, Carl Strait, Anna from Team Rehab, Tim Crowley, Rose Bergen, Kathleen Barton of Graceful Planet, Jerry Ryan, Jim Casagrande, Francis Urann, Officer Steve Ketchum, Karen Cook, Dr Begg of Danbury Hospital ER, Joanne D’Auirro, Donna McCarthy, Pam Crowcroft, Newtown Youth Services, Career Club, Karen Moore of Education Connection, Cindy Burke of Alzheimer’s Association, Beartiz Gallagher, D. Marr, Nina Laudano, and Christopher Sora of the Physical Medicine and Wellness Center for their participation in the health fair.

“I think it’s really cool,” Alex Konneker said. “It’s fun to see all the different things and learn about health related issues.”
