Lose The Litter Day Is Coming

The Newtown Lions Club will sponsor the annual Lose the Litter Day on Sunday, April 27, from 9 am to 1 pm. The rain date is May 4.

Residents of Newtown will band together to clean up roadsides in town. Volunteers may pick up bags and gloves at the Newtown Middle School from 9 am to 1 pm on the day of the event; the actual cleanup may be done at any time during the day.

The Lions are looking for individuals to act as road captains and to line up volunteers for the event. Volunteers may select a particular road or they may be assigned a road on the day of the event. Participants who find one of the coveted “golden cans” will win tickets to the movies at Edmond Town Hall.

The litter collected may be dropped off at the highway department.

This is Newtown’s 14th Lose the Litter Day. The project was started by Judy Holmes and the Newtown Environmental Action Team, which ran the program for the first six years. The Newtown Lions have continued the project in recent years. In the past, the project has drawn wide support from town residents, and more than 300 volunteers have turned out to give the town’s roadsides a thorough spring cleaning.

Anyone interested in more information or in volunteering for a particular road may call the project chairman, Jerome Mayer, at 426-4547.
