Celebrate Textiles Of Many Forms And Styles

MONROE — Monroe Historical Society will have a select group of textiles from its collection on exhibition at the Beardsley Homestead, 31 Great Ring Road in Monroe, on Saturday, April 26, from 9 am to 3 pm.

Among the quilts being featured are two new acquisitions that date from the late 1800s and were made by the Burr family. Two members of this family, daughters Fannie and Jennie, were renowned artists.

Also featured will be the Bicentennial Quilt made by members of the Monroe Historical Society to commemorate the United States Bicentennial. The quilt features 26 individual blocks that depict historic scenes of Monroe. It was the result of a town-wide contest conducted in 1976 by the historical society. The quilt measures 84 by 100 inches and is backed by muslin.

In conjunction with the quilt exhibition, the historical society will be having a sale of new and vintage textiles, fabrics, and textile equipment in the barn at the Beardsley Homestead on the same day. The sale will include duplicate items from society collections, materials that have been donated for sale by members, two floor looms (in “as-is” condition), sewing machines, needlework (finished and unfinished), yarns, patterns, textile magazines and books, vintage pieces of clothing, household linens (vintage and “gently used”) and many other textile-related items.

Call 268-5511 for more information or to donate items for sale. Additional information may be available at www.MonroeHistoricSociety.org.
