It has not been a terribly smooth season thus far for the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team – and it’s not only because of its losses to Fairfield (to start the season) and Glastonbury (last Wednesday).

Two games have already been postponed and the second one – against Brookfield – could have been the Nighthawks opportunity to get back on the right track following the 13-5 defeat at the hands of Glastonbury.

The ‘Hawks are 1-2.

The Newtown defense was holding up well against a strong Glastonbury team last Wednesday at Newtown High School, allowing just two first-period goals. The second came off a loose ball right in front of the Nighthawk cage.

Glastonbury stretched it out a little bit in the second quarter, though, scoring five more times to take a 7-0 lead before senior co-captain Matt Saunders finally got the ‘Hawks on the board for the first time.

Saunders had taken the ball back near the end line, circled around the cage and shot across for the goal.

That’s the way the half ended.

In the third period, the two teams hit the cage often, with Glastonbury scoring five more times and Newtown three more times. Each team scored just one goal in the final stanza to arrive at the 13-5 final.

Saunders finished with three goals – giving him eight for the season. Dan Maley and Casey Kirch also scored while Maley, Kirch and Ted Yemc each recorded assists. Shawn Gleason made nine saves in the cage for the ‘Hawks.

Newtown was scheduled to visit Danbury on Friday for a 3:45 pm game and then will travel to Redding on Tuesday to take on the Falcons in a 4 pm contest. Things will get tougher on Saturday, April 28, though, when the ‘Hawks travel to Brien McMahon.
