Sandy Hook Swimmer Makes A Splash
Andrew Golankiewicz, 17, of Sandy Hook, and a member of the Wilton Y Wahoos Swim Team, swam well enough while competing at the YMCA Short Course Swimming and Diving Championships in Ft Lauderdale, Florida on April 6-9 to qualify for the 2009 Speedo Junior National Championships to be held in Federal Way, Washington August 10-14.
He finished 11th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.27, which was 4.78 seconds faster than his previous
best time) and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (51.86). In the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries he finished in 51.20, which was .87 second faster than his previous best. Golankiewicz also anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay team which placed 11th. His split was 1:42.29, which also was a personal best. Overall, the Wilton Y Wahoos finished in ninth place, one point ahead of New Canaan Community YMCA. More than 60 teams competed in the meet.
