Volleyball Team Gets Key Win Over Rival Masuk
MONROE — Newtown High School's boys' volleyball team shook off a second-set win by host Masuk of Monroe by seizing early control in game three on the way to a 3-1 (25-8, 19-25, 25-8, 25-21) triumph, on the road on April 10.
Ardi Kodzodziku compiled 18 kills and ten digs. Eric Moore racked up 17 assists to go along with ten digs, six kills, and a block. Max Wrage accumulated 22 assists, 17 digs, 17 service points, and kills. Robert DiSibio logged four kills and a pair of blocks.
Set scores: 25-8, 19-25, 25-8, 25-21
"We did not pass well in the second game and our communication on the court was lacking, therefore allowing Masuk to take control of that second set. They were able to shut down our hitters with some blocks, and had some strong serves that we had problems controlling," said Newtown Coach Sandy Doski, adding that she liked how her team bounced back in the next set.
"We were able to regroup and not let the one set loss get in our heads. We came out focused in the third set and helped each other out in regards to spots that we needed to hit, with either serves or our attack. We had some blocks that shut down their offense," Doski said.
This was the first of two meetings with Masuk, one of the tougher foes in the five-school conference.
"This was a huge win for us as this is one of the SWC matches for us. We only play each SWC team twice so each win is a step closer to us winning our conference again," Doski said.
Newtown visited Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Monday in another SWC matchup. The Nighthawks won 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-18), improving to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in SWC play.
Wrage had 18 assists, 16 service points, and 12 digs. Kodzodziku compiled 15 kills, two aces, and five digs. Moore: tallied 18 assists, five kills, four digs, and two blocks.
