Hawley Hosts A STEM Night
For the second year in a row, Hawley Elementary School hosted a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Night for third and fourth graders and their parents on Thursday, March 31.
Hawley math-science specialist Jenna Connors, who organized the event, said the evening is now an annual one for the school, and just half-hour into the evening, Ms Connors said it was "going great."
The STEM Night, Ms Connors said, was held to facilitate parents and students participating in STEM activities. Parents and students were wandering between stations in the school's gymnasium as she spoke, stopping at different activities.
Engaging parents and students in hands-on activities, Ms Connors said, "That's really what the night is all about."
EverWonder Children's Museum offered three tables of activities during the event: A "Magnify This" station, a force and motion table, and a table to create trees out of newspapers.
Other stations at the event included a math apps and websites table and "Multiplication Mania," where students took turns testing their math skills against one another.
At another station students worked to create a "Hawley Skyline" by gluing different colored inch squares of paper to black paper "buildings." The buildings were then glued to a large blue paper "skyline."
Ms Connors said the skyline will be put on display in a hallway near the third and fourth grade classrooms.
