Beautiful Baby Contest Seeking Entries

Entries are sought for the 2016 Beautiful Baby Contest.babycontest2010@gmail.com or 203-270-8017.

Share a photo of a child, newborn-4 years old, for a chance to win Newtown's annual Beautiful Baby Contest. Children do not need to live in Newtown to be entered.

The entry fee is a $10 donation to Homes For Our Troops, and the winner will ride in the Newtown Labor Day Parade in a convertible provided by Mercedes of Danbury.

This year's friendly competition is raising funds for a young soldier who returned home with life-altering injuries. Proceeds will help cover the cost of building a handicap house through the nonprofit Homes For Our Troops.

To enter, send a $10 check made payable to Homes For Our Troops and a nonreturnable 4- by 4-inch photo (cut a 4- by 6-inch down to size) or wallet-size photo with the child's name and a contact phone number and e-mail written clearly on the back to:ÃÂ Baby Contest, c/o Lois Barber, 33 Zoar Road, Sandy Hook CT 06482.

Thank you LeReine, for speaking out about this. The list of public servants who are unfairly targeted for abuse just for doing their jobs has been growing. It is a testament to the power of propaganda that otherwise good and well-meaning people can get so emotional as to act out in this way.

While I respect the outcome of the referendum, I’m disappointed by the way this budget was presented and passed. A 6.72% tax increase and a mill rate jump to 28.78 may have been framed as “just a few dollars a day,” but for many families in town — especially those already stretched thin — those “few dollars” add up quickly. It’s frustrating to see large increases minimized in this way, and I worry that next year we’ll hear, “It’s only a little more than last year,” as if that justifies an ongoing trend of rising taxes. This year’s combined municipal and education budgets total over $141 million — that’s a significant sum.

All of the referendums deserve to be pasted. We have a history of deferring needed maintenance and then paying more years later. These are required to keep our town owned building and roads in working condition.
