The Newtown Choral Society will perform “The Soul of New Orleans” as its spring concert, Sunday, April 26, at 3:30 pm, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

Two trumpets and a saxophone will accompany the choir with high school band director Kurt Eckhardt on trombone and middle school teacher Bob Nolte on percussion, including the timpani.

Subtitled “Su Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the Good Times Roll)” the performance will feature music from southern Louisana, including Creole and Cajun folk songs. Highlighted will be the rarely heard “Four Louisiana Creole Folk Songs” with text taken from “Slave Songs of the United States,” published in 1867 and based on the oral tradition in literature.

Zydeco music, songs from the infancy of jazz and a French lullaby, “Fais Do Do,” will reflect the specific nature of the music of that region, of which New Orleans is the epicenter. Favorites like “Down by the Riverside” and “Jambalaya” will be included.

Tickets, available only at the door, are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students.

For more information, e-mail lel-choir2@se-ltd.com or visit the Newtown Choral Society page on Facebook.

Originally scheduled for December 13, the winter concert of Newtown Choral Society will instead be performed on January 17 at Newtown Meeting House.
