Students Honored At Music Festival

Top performers in Newtown Middle School’s concert band, jazz band, chorus and orchestra were named winners at the Western Regional Music Festivals recently held at Bethel Middle School and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

The Connecticut Music Education Association, a division of the National Association for Music Education, sponsored the festival.

“There was only a select number of students chosen [to participate in this festival,” noted band teacher Liz Cook. “It was very exciting for them.”

In addition to Ms Cook, the student’s respective teachers, orchestral instructor Keith Hedin, jazz band teacher Mark Mahoney, and chorus teacher Jon Pope accompanied them.

Performing at Western Connecticut State University was concert band flutist Laura Koscomb, trumpet players Adam Cantor and Ben Spiegel, tuba player Will Harrison, and percussionist Alex Flemming, as well as jazz band trumpet player Steve Dworkin and percussionist James Hilton and chorus members Stephanie Paproski, Sydney Russell, Caitlin Smiley, Leigh Snellback, Jacqueline Buda, Claire Ober, Jacqueline Kirol, Sarah Truitt, Ryan Silveria, Stewart Tabler, Kevin Walsh, and Jacob Woolf.

Orchestra violinists Timothy Lacouture, Lindsey Jones, Irene Koh, and viola player Emily Loose performed at Bethel Middle School.
