Margaret B. Hyde

Margaret B. (Butterfield) Hyde, 87, of Cannonball Way, Syracuse, N.Y., died April 14 at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. She was born in Waterbury on November 10, 1916, daughter of the late C. Edward and Mabel (Fairfield) Butterfield.

She was raised in Watertown and had lived in Southbury for many years before moving to Syracuse. She was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1936, and Pembroke College at Brown University, Class of 1940.  Ms Hyde served ten years in the US Air Force and was a WWII veteran.

She began her teaching career in Woodbury and then went to work in the Newtown School District, teaching at Sandy Hook Elementary School for 27 years. She received her master’s degree from Western Connecticut Teachers College in 1970. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Watertown for 73 years. She volunteered her time as a Girl Scout leader and was a member of the American Legion, the Southbury Fire Department Auxiliary, and the Southbury Fire Department Fife & Drum Corp. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, reading, and visiting with family.

She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Gary Wilson of Syracuse, N.Y.; five sisters, Betty Weidemier of Litchfield, Patricia Conklin of Zephyr Hills, Fla., Christine Gillette of Oakville, Barbara Rodgers of Watertown, and Carolyn Palmer of Watertown; two brothers-in-law, Albert Rodgers of Watertown and Wallace Palmer of Watertown; three grandchildren, Kate, Chris, and Tim Wilson; 21 nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Purr-ci.

A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 20, at 10 am, at First Congregational Church, 40 DeForest Street, Watertown. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, North Street, Watertown, is private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are by Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main Street, Watertown.
