Cub Scouts Annual Egg Drop Was A Smashing Success
On Thursday, April 3, Cub Scout Troop 270 hosted its annual Egg Drop Event. The Egg Drop is an opportunity for the cub scouts to exercise creativity and critical thinking to design a contraption that will protect a raw egg while being dropped from the top of a fire truck.
Newtown Hook & Ladder helped the cubs, with firefighter Rachael Gindraux at the top of the ladder dropping the contraptions. There were a few designs, including pyramids, boxes, and cylinders, with a variety of padding materials, such as sponges, popcorn, and balloons. The limitations on design were that the contraption could not be bigger than 8 inches x 8 inches x 8 inches, no parachute designs, and no live chickens.
Boy Scout Troop 270 also helped during the event. Scouts from Troop 270 helped by loading the contraptions into a red duffle bag that was then hoisted up by a pulley system to Gindraux at the top of the ladder.
The eggs went through three rounds of elevation. The ladder was first extended to 30 feet, then 50 feet, then 70 feet. After each round, the scouts checked their eggs. The eggs that were still intact advanced to the next round.
