Police report that a large altercation occurred at Newtown Skatepark at Dickinson Park off Deep Brook Road on the afternoon of Sunday, April 10, after a Danbury man allegedly stole personal items from unlocked motor vehicles that were parked there near the facility for skateboarding.

Police said they received a report about 2:38 pm stating that a large fight was underway involving about 15 youths who were upset that the Danbury man had allegedly stolen items from vehicles.

The Danbury man was the focus of the crowd's aggression, police said. The man was not injured, they added.

Several police responded quickly to the park and encountered a group of more than 100 people who had gathered for a town-sponsored fundraising event at the skate park, police said.

The man suspected of stealing items was not at the park when police arrived, resulting in a police search that found him near Elm Drive.

After investigating, police charged Mateus Costa, 18, of Danbury with sixth-degree larceny and with credit card theft, police said. After processing, Mateus was released on $250 bail for an April 21 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

On April 10, the town Parks & Recreation Department sponsored an event called Spring Skate Contest & Fundraiser at the park.

Newtown Police Department will be taking a no-excuses approach to seatbelt law enforcement, writing citations day and night, during the current Click It Or Ticket seatbelt use campaign.
