Individual Youth and Family Counseling Available. Call for further information.

Independent Living Day is Saturday, May 7. If you are a senior in need of assistance or if you would like to volunteer for that day, please call NYS at 270-4335. There is a morning shift and one in the afternoon. Won’t you join us in a fun day of helping others?

Moms Groups

Moms of Multiples next meet on Friday, April 29, at the Methodist Church Hall from 10 to 11 am. There is no charge for this group.

Parents Groups

Newtown Parent Connection — Visit the Parent Connection website at www.newtownparentconnection.org for further information.

Hope And Support Group — Parents with questions or concerns about their child’s possible or confirmed involvements with substances are invited to attend the Hope and Support Group. Meetings are Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Parents’ Corner. All are welcome.

Youth Programs

Super Sitters — Next session will be held on Tuesdays, April 26, May 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 3:15 to 4:45 pm. Cost is $40, which includes all materials and snack. These classes tend to fill quickly so register soon!

HYSAB will meet on Monday, April 25, at 5:30 pm. HYSAB Scholarship forms are available in the Newtown High School Career Center. The deadline is May 2.

MYSAB will meet on Monday, May 2, in Room A-10 at the Newtown Middle School. The meeting will run from 2:15 to 3:30 pm.

NYCAAP AIDS Awareness group for high school students — Meets Wednesdays at 7:30 pm at NYS.

Wired (formerly NO SUDS) will meet Thursdays at NHS from 2 to 3 pm in room A-111. Wired is also presenting a free “Movie Night” on Saturday April 30, 7:30 to 10 pm, to celebrate Newtown’s Stop Underage Drinking Week. The film will be The Incredibles. The event will be outside beside the greenhouse parking lot at Newtown High School. Newtown Youth Services will provide parent chaperones. Refreshments will be sold by Wired at the event and proceeds will be donated to charitable organizations. Bring you own blanket and chair. Rain date will be Friday, May 6, in the NHS cafeteria.

Children of Divorce — Grades 1 through 6 meets first and third Monday of the month. May 2 and May 16 will be the final meetings. The time is 6 to 7:15 pm. This is an interactive group using tools such as games and art therapy. Call for further information. There is no fee for this group.

SibShops — Grades 1 through 6. Usually meets the last Monday of the month from 5 to 7 pm. Meetings are ongoing through May. The next meeting will be April 25. Due to scheduling conflicts, the May meeting will be on Wednesday, May 18. There is no fee for this group.

Youth Awards

Gail Smith Awards. Each year Newtown Youth Services is proud to recognize one adult, one youth, and one business for their exceptional contribution to the youth of Newtown. The presentation of the Gail Smith Awards is Monday, May 23, 7 pm, at Booth Library.

Outstanding Youth Awards. Nominees will be judged on outstanding qualities in the following categories: service to others, babysitting, friend, sister/brother, or any other outstanding qualities. We will be presenting these awards on Thursday, May 26, at 4 pm in the Booth Library.

Nomination forms for both awards are available at NYS, the schools, churches, Drug Center, Booth Library, and Park and Rec. All nominations must be received by noon, May 6.
