Free Health Screenings At Senior Center

More than 50 seniors took part in the first of a series of health screenings offered at the Newtown Senior Center on April 6, according to Marion Pollack, RN, care management coordinator for Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging. The health screenings are made possible by a grant through the agency.

Dr Richard Gosnay, DPM, provided free podiatric examinations to seniors, most of whom took advantage, as well, of hearing screenings offered by Dennis DeNaghelfa, a hearing technician for Howard Raff, AES.

Seniors are referred for further testing if any problems are identified during the screenings.

Further screenings to be offered at the center include a “Lifeline” screening on May 6. This includes a stroke/carotid artery screening; abdominal aortic aneurysm screening; peripheral arterial disease screening; and a 60 second osteoporosis screening. The “Lifeline” screening is limited to 90 people.

On May 24, screenings for vision and dental will take place at the center.

Seniors over 60 years of age, caregivers, and disabled persons can sign up for these free, noninvasive, painless screenings by calling 270-4310.

The Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, Inc develops, manages, and provides comprehensive services for seniors, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities in order to help them maintain independence and quality of life. The Waterbury-based agency services 41 towns in Connecticut.
