Nancy S. Slocum, 83, of Pitt County, N.C., died April 3. She was born November 12, 1930, in New Jersey, to Helen and Sam Scott.

Mrs Slocum, of Russian decent, moved to Newtown as a young girl, and graduated from Newtown High School in 1949.

She married the love of her life, Bill, in June 1949 and they had 59 wonderful years together before his passing on September 15, 2008. To their union, an only child, Nancy Barbara, or “Babs,” was born.

Mrs Slocum was employed by the State of Connecticut for 29 years.  She supervised the patient vocational employment at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown.

After retiring, the Slocums traveled extensively. In 1989, they moved to Winterville, N.C., and spent their time volunteering at Ronald McDonald House and Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the hospital where she had two heart operations, in 2000 and 2011, performed by W. “Randy” Chitwood, MD, who affectionately called her the “catbird.”

She loved the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter and Nascar’s Tony Stewart.

To cherish her memory, her daughter Nancy S. Bunch and son-in-law, Kenny, of Winterville survive Mrs Slocum; as well as brothers Sam Scott of Newtown and George Scott of Cambridge, Maine. Her maternal uncle, Mike Sedor of Connecticut,  sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews and her precious feline also survive her.

The family offers sincerest thanks to Dr Robin Adams, Dr W. Chitwood, Dr Jorge Abdallah, Dr Tony Christiano, Dr Robert Shaw, and Dr Todd Lineberry for their compassionate medical care. To her caregiver Jeri and her helper, Linda, a heartfelt thanks. To all her special friends who supported her and gave her strength on this incredible journey, thanks as well.

A memorial service to celebrate Mrs Slocum’s life will take place Saturday, April 19, at 2 pm, at St Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Louis Street, Greenville, N.C.  A private committal inurnment service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Estates in Grifton, N.C.
