Accident Investigation Continues

By Andrew Gorosko

Police this week continued their investigation into a three-vehicle accident early this month that critically injured a local motorcyclist, according to Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner.

Midday on Wednesday, motorcyclist Peter Sturges, 53, of 3 Underhill Road, in the Riverside section of Sandy Hook, remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Danbury Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. Mr Sturges was injured in the accident that occurred about 11:10 am Saturday April 1, near 30 Church Hill Rd.

The police department’s accident reconstruction team is assembling the details of the crash that caused Mr Sturges’ injuries, said Sgt Wisentaner. No charges have been lodged in the case.

Mr Sturges, who was driving a 1992 Harley-Davidson Sportster, was attempting to exit the parking lot at 30 Church Hill Road and turn left to go westward on Church Hill Road, while a motorist was driving a 1999 Hyundai sedan eastward there on Church Hill Road. The two vehicles collided in the road’s eastbound lane, heavily damaging the Hyundai.

Due to the impact, Mr Sturges was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle then slid into a rear fender of a 2004 Mazda sedan, which was pulling out of the driveway at 32 Church Hill Road to turn left to go westward on Church Hill Road.

Mr Sturges was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, police have said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Mr Sturges to Danbury Hospital. One of the two other motorists was treated at the hospital and released.

The police department’s accident reconstruction team spent about two hours at the scene investigating the crash.
