WOODBURY â Award-winning author Virginia Small will teach a five-week course for adults titled âWriting About Natureâ at Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust beginning Thursday, April 19. Classes will be held weekly from 7 to 9:30 pm in the Flanders Studio Welcome Center.
Open to writers at all levels, this course will focus on heightening awareness and appreciation of the natural world and translating personal insight and observation into various genres, including essay, journaling, poetry, and journalism.
Participants will read nature-related literature and discuss elements that contribute to successful writing. They will learn to tap into their distinctive âwriterâs voiceâ through exercises designed to spark the creative process.
Virginia Small, a former senior editor at Fine Gardening magazine, has won awards for her writing from the Garden Writers Association, Connecticut Poetry Society and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her journalistic work has also appeared in many publications, including Connecticut Home and Garden, The American Gardener, and the St. Petersburg Times. Her poetry has been published in literary journals, a textbook on writing, and other publications.
