Would You Sign Declaration Of Independence Today?

The Danbury area branch of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a discussion and debate on The Declaration of Independence Tuesday, April 24, from 7 to 9 pm, in the meeting room of C.H. Booth Library.

The discussion will concern “Knowing The Implications, Would You Sign The Declaration of Independence Today?”

There will be a short presentation of the facts and context of the Declaration, followed by a 13-minute film of a dramatic reading of the document in Independence Hall by a dozen famous American actors and actresses. Then the floor will be turned over to those in attendance for discussion and debate.

Moderator for the event will be Paul G. Mangiafico, MD, of Newtown. Guest Speaker will be Newtown journalist and author David A. Shugarts, who has made an extensive study of the Declaration.

The event is sponsored by the Chaplain Ebenezer Baldwin Branch No. 9 of the Connecticut Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

The SAR is a membership organization of men whose lineal ancestors supported the Patriot cause during the War for Independence. The all-volunteer, nonprofit organization supports patriotic, educational, and historic projects. More information about the organization, and about famous Patriots such as Connecticut’s own Nathan Hale, can be found at ConnecticutSAR.org.

Students and history buffs take note: Copies of the text of the Declaration will available at the meeting, but the text, images and other information may be obtained at USHistory.org/declaration/document.
