Bernard P. Karcheski, 88, of Danbury and a former longtime resident of Newtown, died unexpectedly April 5 in Danbury Hospital. Mr Karcheski was the husband of the late Isabelle (Carnecka) Karcheski.
He was born in Newtown on April 22, 1918, a son of William and Dorothy (Bokachalski) Karcheski. Mr Karcheski grew up on the family farm in Newtown and was a graduate of Newtown High School where he played on the basketball team. He attended the Franciscan Seminary in Rochester, N.Y., and during World War II he was an air raid warden.
He was employed as a bookkeeper for Northeast Utilities in Bethel for many years until his retirement. Following retirement he lived in Meriden for a time before moving to Danbury.
Mr Karcheski was a former driver for the Newtown Ambulance Association and was a member of the Connecticut State Police Auxiliary. He was an avid lover of animals.
His family was first and foremost. He was always ready to help people and lend a hand when needed.
Mr Karcheski is survived by his children, Bernard P. Karcheski, Jr, of Clifton, N.J., Dr Marilyn Isabelle Schmidt of San Diego, Calif., and Dr Dorothy Theresa Karcheski of Show Low, Ariz.; a grandson, Thomas Matthew Schmidt; and a brother, Stanley Karcheski of Brookfield. In addition to his wife and parents, Bernard was predeceased by his brothers, William, Michael, and Alfred Karcheski; and by his sisters, Sally Wallace, Sophie Beardsley, and Stella Woodin.
Funeral services were held April 11 from the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown and in St Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in St Rose Cemetery.
