Back To The 90s: Rockin’ For Autism Annual Benefit Concert Raises Funds For Families United In Newtown
Families United in Newtown (FUN) hosted an unforgettable evening on March 29, when they presented the “Back to the 90s: Rockin’ for Autism” benefit concert and dinner.
Held at Newtown Congregational Church, the event brought together the community for an evening of music, food, friendship and fundraising, all in support of individuals and families with special needs.
Doors opened at 5 pm, offering guests an opportunity to mingle over appetizers and participate in a raffle and silent auction “stroll.” Attendees had the chance to bid on 81 donated items, contributing to the evening’s fundraising goals.
At 6 pm, guests were invited into the church sanctuary to enjoy a live music performance. The 90’s-themed concert featured a dynamic setlist that included beloved hits such as “Macarena,” “I Want It That Way,” and more, performed by local artists including the Newtown High School Singers.
The concert ended with the entire audience standing and doing the wave while joining the performers in singing “We Are the World.”
Additionally, Dr Margaret Bauman, MD, a leading pediatric neurologist and research investigator and a pioneer in the treatment of autism addressed the audience regarding her research. Dr Bauman was then presented a check from FUN in the amount of $2,500 to help her continue with her study into the causes and treatment of autism.
The event then shifted to the church’s Great Room for a delicious dinner. Attendees enjoyed a gourmet macaroni and cheese bar with a variety of toppings, including pulled pork, pulled chicken, bacon, broccoli, and crumble top donated by ten local restaurants. The 90s decorated setting provided the perfect conclusion to a memorable evening, with guests savoring comfort food while continuing to support the mission of Families United in Newtown.
The event raised funds to support FUN, an organization that since 2010 has been providing social and emotional opportunities for families with children, teens, and adults with special needs. The concert’s success reflects the continued strength and unity of Newtown and the surrounding towns supporting this important cause.
The gala was sold out, with standing room only for the 200+ guests of all ages.
FUN Co-Founder Linda Jones said she and other organizers were “grateful for everyone who came out to support us. The event not only helped raise crucial funds but also raised awareness for the ongoing needs of individuals with autism and other special needs as we enter into April — Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.”
Families United in Newtown was established in 2008 by Newtown residents Linda and Duane Jones with a dream of providing recreational programs and respite for families with special needs children. Following the death of their son Tyler, the program blossomed with the support of Newtown High School National Honor Society students.
The first FUN gathering was held in October 2010, in memory of Tyler, and since then FUN has hosted regular events. FUN provides an outlet for families with special needs children as well as promotes autism awareness.
