FOR 4-20

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY CRAFT BUILDS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

avv/gs set 4/12 #695940

PORTLAND, ORE. — Infused with a renewed vitality and the intent to be a more active leader and partner in Portland’s cultural community, Museum of Contemporary Craft has seized the opportunity to become part of a vital new arts destination being developed by arts patron Jim Winkler downtown.

Designed by Portland-based Richard Brown Architects and Forsgren Design Studio, the museum will occupy 15,000 square feet on the corner of Northwest 8th Avenue and Davis Street.

As the anchor tenant of this consortium dubbed the DeSoto project — a reference to the site’s past as a car dealership that is still acknowledged on the historic building’s south façade — Museum of Contemporary Craft will be joined by Augen Gallery, Froelick Gallery, Blue Sky Gallery and Charles Hartman Fine Art.

Poised on the scenic, tree-lined North Park Blocks, the project promises to bridge the bustling Pearl District with new activity emerging in Oldtown/Chinatown. This new arts destination will link an active corridor along Davis Street that includes the Weiden + Kennedy building designed by Brad Cloepfil, Portland Center Stage’s Gerding Theater at the Armory, Portland Art Center and the White Stag building now being developed by University of Oregon.

The Museum of Contemporary Craft will be within a few short blocks of the Regional Arts & Culture Council, several contemporary art galleries along Ninth Avenue, the famous Powell’s Books, Portland Classical Chinese Garden, and numerous hotels, restaurants, cafes, music venues and independent retailers.

Approximately 80 percent of the $6.5 million capital campaign goal has been raised to date, in addition to important contributions by individual donors.

With each gift, Museum of Contemporary Craft moves closer to realizing its ambitious vision that will debut with a grand reopening on July 22.
