‘Yes’ On Question Five

To the Editor:

We have some important decisions to make here in Newtown on April 22. Number 5 on the ballot is for a bond measure for a new HVAC system for the library. The library currently works on one of two boilers; the other hasn’t worked for some time. Nothing has been neglected; the working boiler has had repairs over the years to the tune of $259,000. Parts for it are no longer available. The boiler was built in 1970 — 38 years into the library’s life, and over 50 years ago. It is time our town treasure gets a circulation reboot.

Perhaps you, like me, go to the library for one of many reasons — as a grandparent bringing your grandchild to a program (there were 49 children’s programs in March), or to learn Mahjong (a group so large they need to move to a new location in the library), or to join a book club (one of over 13 — “Cook the Books” is a great one where they yes — cook)! So many reasons to go to the library, and yes, we expect our 36,000 square foot building to be cool or warm depending on the weather. We need to take care of our library like it takes care of us. Please join me in voting YES on Question 5 on April 22.
