Seniors & Volunteers Needed For Independent Living Day
Seniors & Volunteers Needed For Independent Living Day
This past winterâs severe weather has left Newtown with plenty of spring cleanup work to be done, but on May 3 help will be available for senior citizens thanks to the fourth annual Independent Living Day.
Newtown Youth Services is sponsoring the program again this year, which began in 1999 by AARP. This annual event is an opportunity for young people, families, and anyone interested in volunteering to be rakers, window washers, painters, cleaners, planters, and the like for senior citizens in town that live independently and would like some help repairing winter damage or preparing for warm weather.
Seniors can get a survey form from the Senior Center, many of the Newtown churches, Nunnawauk Meadows, social services, the library, or several stores and business around town. Seniors can also call NYS at 270-4335 to compete a survey by phone.
Volunteers will find forms available at many of the locations listed above as well as the Newtown High School Career Center, or call NYS to sign up. Group and family sign-ups are needed as well.
May 3 is closer than many think, so seniors should send in their work requests or volunteer survey right away. Independent Living Day is a perfect way to help the community by enhancing the beauty of Newtown by helping neighbors and having fun.
