Fourth Annual Independent Living Day — Saturday, May 3, from 9:30 am to 3 pm. This day is designed to help senior citizens continue to live independently “with a little help from their friends.”

If you would like assistance with some simple household chores or would like to volunteer to help a senior citizen, please call NYS at 270-4335 to register.

Requests from seniors need to be received by Monday, April 14.

The 16th Annual NYS Talent Show — Show time is Friday, May 9, at 7 pm, with dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 7.

There will be a $5 registration charge per person payable at dress rehearsal.

Gail Smith Awards — Three awards will be given: one to an adult, one to a youth, and one to a business. Ballots are available at NYS, the library, and the Drug Center. All nominations must be received by noon on May 2. The awards will be presented on Monday, May 19, at 7 pm.

Outstanding Youth Awards — As part of the “Celebrate Youth Festival” NYS will be presenting awards to young people from the community at a ceremony on Thursday, May 22, at 4 pm.

Nominees will be judged on outstanding qualities in the following categories: Service to Others, Baby-sitting, Friend, Sister/Brother, or any other outstanding quality.

Parent Programs

Parents of Children with Learning Differences –– Meets every other Monday. Next meeting will be April 14 from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Be Aware: Heroin on the Rise — Presented by John Hamilton on Monday, April 21 (RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER) in the Memorial Room. Parents program will begin at 7 pm and concerned students will meet at 8:15 pm. Please call to register for this important program.

Newtown Skatepark Association — Fundraising kickoff meeting for all Newtown parents will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 7 pm in the boardroom of Newtown Youth Services building. Please call Matt at 270-4334 for more information.

Ongoing Groups

New Format for Fathers’ Group with Frank Oliveria –– Saturday, April 12, at 10 am. Fathers, bring your children and share your common parenting experiences. This is a great way for babies and toddlers to get out with their dads.

Moms of Multiples –– Will meet on Thursday, April 24, at NYS.

Working Moms –– Meets the first Saturday of the month at 10 am. Next group is May 3.

Youth Programs

Spring Break Programs for Middle Schoolers — Teen Cuisine – Come and have fun while learning to prepare delicious, springtime meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Three days –– Monday, April 14, through Wednesday, April 16, noon to 2:30 pm at St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook. Price includes materials for all three sessions at $45 per person.

Tennis Academy – Enjoy the spring and practice your tennis skills with youth outreach coordinator Matt Rosen. Work on drills, strategies, and noncompetitive tournament play. Please bring your tennis racquet and a can of tennis balls. Meet at Dickenson Park Tennis Courts on Tuesday, April 15, from 1 to 3:30 pm, and Thursday, April 17, from noon to 2:30 pm. You may sign up for one or both sessions at $5 per person, per session.

4-H –– Moving Back to the Greenhouse at Fairfield Hills — Grades 1–4 meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 pm. Grades 5–8 meets Saturdays, 10 am to noon. Call 270-4335 to sign up.

SibShops –– Meets on the third Thursday of the month from 3:45 to 5:30 pm at the middle school. The next meeting will be April 24.

Children of Divorce –– Grades 2–5, Mondays from 6 to 7 pm, will be held at NYS. The next group will meet on April 14. Please call to register.

Youth Group Meetings

Excellent opportunity for fun community service projects!

HSYAB (High School Community Service Group) –– Meets on Monday, April 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

MSYAB (Middle School Community Service Group) –– YAB will meet on Wednesday, April 23, from 4 to 5 pm.

NYCAAP (AIDS Awareness Group) –– Meets every Wednesday from 5:45 to 6:45 pm.

AIDSWEAR –– Meets every Monday from 5:15 to 6:15 pm.

Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to attend or call NYS for further information.
