Newtown High School's tennis teams took on Pomperaug of Southbury and Weston, two of the top teams in the South-West Conference, this past week.

The girls fell 5-2 to visiting Pomperaug on April 4. Top singles player Marie Ann Tomaj won her match 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, and 7-6. Coach Maureen Maher's girls' squad lost 6-1 to Weston on April 8, with the top doubles team of Julia Klein and Julia Dolan prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

On the boys' court, the only match of the week for Coach Anna Malkin's Nighthawks was a 7-0 setback to Weston on April 8. The individual matches were close with No. 2 singles player Stephen Dooley (3-6, 3-6) and No. 4 player Ben Futterman (4-6, 3-6), and the third doubles tandem of Chris Lindsay and Milan Charid (4-6, 3-6) giving their opponents battles.

Tough competition was slated to continue Thursday, with the teams taking on the Pomperaug Panthers.
