Spring Sports Season Gets Going; Changes Made To Schedules
Newtown High School’s spring sports season is underway. The baseball, softball, boys’ volleyball, and tennis teams were all in action on Wednesday, April 8; the boys’ lacrosse team opened its campaign on April 9 with a win over Brookfield; and the girls’ lacrosse squad will begin its season with a visit to Brookfield on Friday, April 10 (game time, originally set for 7 pm, was changed to 6 pm).
Both of the high school’s golf teams had their early spring matches postponed because of rain and unplayable course conditions. The girls’ golf team is now slated to get things started with a Monday, April 13, visit to Immaculate of Danbury for a 3 pm start; the home opener is now set for April 21, when Weston visits Rock Ridge Country Club at 3 pm.
The boys’ golf team is scheduled to have its first match on Wednesday, April 15, when the Nighthawks visit Masuk of Monroe for a 3 pm tee off. Newtown’s first home match will be April 22 when Notre Dame-Fairfield comes to town at 3 pm.
Several opening week sporting events have been put on hold: The baseball team’s home clash with Berlin, originally set for April 10, was moved to May 9, at noon. Girls’ and boys’ tennis matches with Joel Barlow of Redding were also postponed on April 10 and will be on dates to be announced. Newtown’s softball game against visiting St Joseph of Trumbull, which was to have taken place on April 9, was pushed to 4 pm on May 2. The track and field teams won’t to get started until next week as planned.
Game And Match Highlights
*In a rematch of last year’s South-West Conference championship game, Newtown’s boys’ lacrosse team toppled visiting Brookfield 13-6. Deegan Beauchemin and Jared Pearson both had hat-tricks, and Conrad Morris and David MacKinnon each scored twice. The NHS laxmen are scheduled to host Fairfield Ludlowe at 2 pm on Saturday, April 11 (at Blue & Gold Stadium).
*The baseball team had a pair of one-run contests to begin play. The Hawks fell 5-4 at Staples of Westport in its season opener, then edged visiting Fairfield Ludlowe 6-5 the next day, April 9. Sam Czel was 2-for-3, with a double and a home run, and drove in three runs, and Charlie Huegi was also 2-for-3. Jake Oliger had a double and knocked in two runs, and David Matthews had a hit and an RBI.
*Newtown’s softball team lost 10-6 at Trumbull High in its first game. Katie Laaksonen was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs batted in, and scored two runs; Emily Woznick had a double, single, two runs batted in, and run scored; Sara Kennedy had her first varsity hit, a double, and a run scored; Kamdyn Moroney had a double; Mackenzie Macchiarulo collected her first varsity hit and drove in a run; and Mikayla Kuligowski and Haley Ryan, who singled, each scored a run for Newtown.
The Nighthawks, following six games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, return for their first home game when Masuk of Monroe visits for a 4:15 pm contest on Thursday, April 16. This is the first of three home contests in as many days; Pomperaug of Southbury comes to town on Friday, April 17, also at 4:15 pm, and Brookfield visits the next day for a 3 pm first pitch.
*On the courts, both tennis teams lost 5-2 decisions in their first matches. The girls fell to Bunnell of Stratford. The Nighthawks got both of their wins in doubles play as top doubles players Aimee Alexander and Julia Doyle defeated Madeline Vedeira and Marissa Guasp, 8-1, and the No. 2 tandem of Lindsay O’Donnell and Amanda Berry topped Charlene Plavnicky and Montana Honafius, 8-1. The boys lost in Weston. Top singles player Keaton McCleary defeated Sebastian Casellas, 6-4, 6-3; and No. 3 singles player Matt Carino defeated Eric Benninghoff, 6-1, 6-4 for Newtown’s two victories. The boys also dropped a 5-2 match at Pomperaug of Southbury on April 9; Carino and No. 2 player Joey Conrod both picked up wins.
*Newtown’s first-year boys’ volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-10) to visiting Darien in its opener. Jeremy Doski had three assists, six digs, and two kills; Jake Lapp had two assists and one dig; Jeff DePinto had five digs and three kills; and Sawyer Conrad and Andy Braun played great defense for the Nighthawks. Newtown’s season continues with a 5 pm visit to Masuk of Monroe today, Friday, April 10.
