Aitchisons Celebrate
Their Golden Anniversary
Marjorie and Alex Aitchison of Newtown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 4. Family gathered with them at the Spinning Wheel Inn in Redding to reminisce about their journey through life together since taking their vows in 1959 in Melbourne, Australia.
The Aitchisons came to the United States in 1972 when Alex took on the role of chief executive officer at the Port Washington Tennis Academy on Long Island, N.Y. Together they mentored hundreds of young tennis players through instruction and competitive play, providing opportunity to build character through the sport of tennis.
The couple moved to Newtown in 1992 where they quickly became involved in tennis here, rebuilding the Newtown Tennis Association. Since arriving in Newtown they also joined other volunteer organizations, including Meals on Wheels and Canine Advocates of Newtown, providing care to people and animals in need.
Alex also serves on the board of Danbury Grassroots Tennis and he is currently the tennis director of Newtown Youth Academy. These days, aside from supporting Alex, Marj dedicates much of her time to caring for the beautiful orchids that she grows, as well as tending the lovely gardens that she and Alex have created. She is very knowledgeable about gardening, and willingly shares not only advice, but also plants, flowers, and vegetables with her friends.
Marj and Alex have three sons living on Long Island, N.Y.: Perry, Grant and Scott, who jointly organized an anniversary celebration for their parents. Perry is unmarried and a master tennis teaching professional. Grant is married to Dawn and they have two children, Julie and Michael, and Scott is married to Christin and they have three children, Alec, Tyler and Emily.
Among those joining the festivities were Christinâs parents, Bob and Karen Nash of Newtown.
Marjorie and Alex have a simple remedy for a good marriage: Love, and lots of it. Care for each other always. And respect each otherâs opinions.
