Artie Shaw Orchestra Returning To Fireside Inn

The world famous Artie Shaw Orchestra is returning to Newtown’s Fireside Inn on Sunday, April 22, for an elegant Big Band dinner dance entitled “Begin The Beguine.” Under the leadership of Dick Johnson, Mr Shaw’s hand-selected choice to lead the band which bears his name, the acclaimed ensemble played to a full house two years ago at the Fireside, and returns to Newtown directly from an engagement at the legendary Rainbow Room.

The Fireside event is another Ritz Ballroom dance which has gained great popularity over the last few years in Newtown and is produced by local promoter and radio personality Jeffrey C. Williams. The mood created will be that of a sophisticated and elegant 1930s or 40s supper club, where patrons gathered for the finest in dining and dance entertainment.

Artie Shaw, who turns 92 this May, has been getting a lot of attention recently. He was featured in a Vanity Fair magazine article, was extensively interviewed and included on the recent Ken Burns Jazz series, and is writing another book.

A served dinner with choice of prime rib, chicken piccata or stuffed salmon will precede the dance when doors open at 4 pm. Dancing will be from 5 until 9, and a cash bar will be available throughout the event. Parking is free, tables of 10 or 12 may be reserved, and the Fireside accepts checks and credit cards.

Ticket for “Begin The Beguine” are $45 per person including tax and gratuity and may be obtained by calling Fireside Inn of Newtown at 426-7001 or  203-330-0303.
