Boys’ Tennis To Contend In South-West Conference
Coming off a successful spring last year, the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team again looks to be among the best in the South-West Conference.
Three returning seniors are captains, Theo Anderson, Liam Conlin, and George Eppers, who will help lead the way for Coach Shawn Tierney’s lineup. Also returning are A.J. Singh, Frankie Cannizzo, Ryan Hislop, Aarav Shetty, and Cam Linnetz. Standout all-conference players Singh and Cannizzo will anchor the team at the top two singles spots, and the rest of the lineup is to be determined as the preseason unfolds, Tierney said.
Singh reached the SWC semifinals at the top singles spot, Cannizzo was the champion at No. 2 singles, and Anderson and Conlin were the champs at third doubles last spring.
New team members are freshmen Brody Paulsen and Sean Conlin, sophomore Joe Mele, junior Steven Singlak, and senior Josh Prud’home.
Last year, the Nighthawks lost just one match in conference play, to Weston. “We’re hoping to avenge that loss this year to the perennial champs,” Tierney said.
Weather permitting, the Nighthawks will not have to wait long to face their toughest competitors. The season begins Thursday, April 10, when Pomperaug of Southbury visits at 4 pm and then the second match is Monday, April 14, at Weston starting at 11 am.
