Rossini Work Will Be Concert Centerpiece

WATERBURY — The Waterbury Chorale will perform Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle on Saturday, April 17, at 8 pm. The concert will be at St John’s Episcopal Church, 16 Church Street (on the green).

The Petite Messe Solennelle, a highly operatic setting of the Mass, was referred to by Rossini as “the last mortal Sin of My Old Age.” It is considered by many to be one of the finest works composed by Rossini (1792-1868), who was recognized by his contemporaries as the greatest Italian composer of his time.

The Mass will feature Joseph Jacovino, director of music at St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, as pianist, and Raymond Buttero as organist. Vocal soloists will be soprano Jennifer Wojcik, mezzo-soprano Barbara Youmans, tenor Ray Bauwens, and baritone Howard Sprout.

Tickets are $18 in advance ($12 for ages 12 and under), $20 at the door, and may be purchased in advance by telephoning Carol Palmer at 264-7120 or Jean Schmidt at 203-755-2561.
