Newtown Schools Set Graduation Dates

By Larissa Lytwyn

Newtown High School’s class of 2004 will be graduating on the evening of Saturday, June 19, at the William O’Neil Convocation Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. The exact time is yet to be determined.

“As you can see, our class sizes have grown quite large,” noted Superintendent of Schools Evan Pitkoff during the Board of Education’s last meeting April 1.

Newtown Middle School will also host its eighth grade moving up ceremony at the William O’Neil Convocation Center on Monday, June 21. The time is yet to be determined.

Last year, Newtown Middle School’s moving up ceremony was held at Newtown High School. Space was so limited that many families were forced to watch the event through television monitors in the school’s cafeteria.

This year, Dr Pitkoff assured, the events are sure to go smoother. “The ceremonies will take place inside the O’ Neil Center, rain or shine,” he said. “There will be plenty of room.”

Board member Paul Mangiafico asked if more snow days could affect the graduation dates.

Dr Pitkoff said no. Any more snow days will be taken out of Newtown schools’ upcoming spring vacation April 19–23.

The school board unanimously approved the graduation dates during its last meeting April 1.
