Newtown Hikers Set To Explore Area Trails
Ester Nichols, president of the Newtown Hikers Club, has announced the clubâs 2004 Spring Schedule. Unless otherwise stated, all hikes will start at 9 am on Saturday from the lower rear parking lot of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street in Newtown. Always check with the listed leader of each hike for weather cancellations and or schedule changes.
April 10, Toddâs Point, Greenwich, leader is Jack Donlon (203-966-8421);
April 17, Hubbard Park, Meriden, leader is Ester Nichols (426-2897);
April 24, Butler Sanctuary, Mount Kisco, N.Y., leader is Ildiko Gramling (203-263-0086);
May 1, Central Park & Hayden Planetarium, New York City, all day hike, bring money for train, planetarium entry fee, restaurant dinner; leader is Nancy Zigler (732-2618; Note earlier start time at 8 am sharp!);
May 8, Mine Hill Preserve, Roxbury, leader is Len Patti (426-3632);
May 15, Bennetts Farm, Pine Mountain, Ridgefield, leader is David Wesley (203-438-1459);
May 22, Bushkill Falls, Penn., all day hike, entrance fee, very picturesque, dinner is optional; leader is Morie Colburn (203-937-8067);
May 29, Bartholemewâs Cobble, Mass., entrance fee $4; leader is Claire Sivacek (744-0086);
June 5, Minnewaska, New Paltz, N.Y., all day hike, ten miles, entrance fee, moderate to difficult, dinner optional; leader is Morie Colburn (203-937-8067);
June 12, Hudson River Boat Cruise, out of Newburg, N.Y.; hike in area in the morning, cruise at 1 pm, $15.75, $13.75 for seniors; leader is Ester Nichols (426-2897);
June 19, End of year pot luck picnic, rain or shine, pavilion at Osborndale State Park, Derby, short hike, donation for park; leader is Tim Hanbury (203-888-3025), food coordinator is Rita Qubick (268-4119); and
June 26, End of year weekend in New Hampshire, reservations required, leader is Rita Qubick (268-4119).
Newtown Hikers is an open group welcoming anyone interested in hiking and the outdoors.
There is no membership fee. To receive the mailing of hiking schedules all year, send $3 with your name and address to Claire Sivacek, 114 Stadley Rough Road, Danbury CT 06811.
Hikers participate at their own risk and must sign a release for the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department.
If you want to meet the group at a different point, call the leader. Also, call the leader if the weather is doubtful. All hikes are moderate unless otherwise stated and last three to five hours plus driving time. Children are welcome accompanied by adults.
