Good As Gold — Winter Guards Take Home Medals In Musical Arts Conference Championships

The youngest and the oldest divisions of Newtown High School Winter Guard brought home gold medals at the 2011 Musical Arts Conference Winter Guard Championships, held at Trumbull High School on April 2. The Junior color guard division, comprising eight students and grades five and six, from Reed Intermediate School, won the championships for the first time in ten years.

The Newtown Varsity Winter Guard won the Scholastic National A division for the eighth year in a row, defeating five other high schools from three states. The 16-member Junior Varsity division defeated four high schools to take sixth place in the Scholastic A division after being moved up two levels this year.

All three Newtown guards, under the direction of Newtown High School Band Director Kurt Eckhardt, are instructed by Bob Findley. Next weekend, the 21 members of the Varsity Guard travel to Dayton, Ohio for the World Guard International Championships.
