Horticulture Club To Host A

Tercentennial Program On April 14

In celebration of Newtown’s Tercentennial, the Horticulture Club of Newtown will present a program called “The History and Evolution of Horticulture in the Newtown Area,” on Thursday, April 14. The program will begin at 7:30 pm at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

The speaker will be the garden designer and horticulturist Jane Brook Barba. Ms Barba, who lives in Sherman, has a degree in botany from the New York Botanical Garden, and studied garden restoration and preservation at the Art Foundation of La Napoule, in the south of France.

She is a lecturer for the New York Botanical Garden, and a member of both the Glebe House Committee and the Conservation Committee of Candlewood Lake.

Her lecture will focus on the history of gardens in this area, how they related to peoples’ lives, and the plants commonly used in them.

She will show how plant use and styles of gardening have evolved as the community has changed over time, and the lifestyles and gardening styles of its people have also changed.

The public is welcome to join club members, free of charge. Refreshments will follow the lecture. Call 426-3170 for additional information.
