On the second day, the first of the two-session sale contains a select offering of European paintings and American folk art. Included will be an oil on canvas, âAmsterdam Winter,â by Pieter C. A single lot of approximately 425 autographs, assembled 1894â1895, features many key American personalities of the day, was found in a shirt box in a closet. The collection had been part of a large scrapbook. The gatherer, a man named Burbank, mailed requests all over the country to celebrities of the late 1800s, and in one way or another enticed them to reply with various sentiments.
The lot includes various Civil War personages, Presidential and other political figures, authors, artists and entertainers. Central to the collection are the signatures of such individuals as Red Cross founder Clara Barton, a handwritten poem by Helen Keller, a letter on Womenâs Suffrage Association stationery written by Susan B. Anthony and a typed letter on band stationery by John Philip Sousa. Of significance is a short missive with the first verse of America handwritten and signed by Samuel Francis Smith. Also represented are Booker T. Washington, Thomas Edison, P.T. Barnum, Horace Greeley and Ulysses S. Grant ($5/10,000).
An estate lot of more than 15 Oriental rugs will include two antique Heriz room size rugs (each $2/3,000).
A New York City collection yields a large collection of more than 130 pieces Flow Blue. A 24-inch covered potpourri jar with intricate floral decoration is expected to be the top seller ($1,5/2,500).
The dayâs session will end with approximately 140 lots of prehistoric Indian artifacts from the estate of Allen Graves.
