Sluggers And Spikers Begin Season With Wins
Newtown High School's baseball and boys' volleyball team posted season-opening wins on April 5.
The volleyball team went to Kolbe Cathedral in Bridgeport and defeated the Cougars 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-22).
Silas Decker had seven kills, two aces, two assists, and a block; Ardi Kodzodziku logged five kills, two aces, and two assists; Gavin Stubbs recorded six kills and a pair of blocks; and Nick Lansing had 12 assists.
The NHS spikers return to the court on Friday, April 7, when Fairfield Ludlowe visits at 4 pm. Joel Barlow of Redding comes to Newtown on Monday, April 10, also at 4 pm.
On the baseball diamond, the host Nighthawks topped Fairfield Warde 7-1 to score a victory in new Coach Ian Thoesen's debut.
The Newtown sluggers erased a 1-0 deficit after a half-inning of play and got a complete game pitching performance from Jason Hebner, who allowed just one hit, walked five, and struck out five batters.
Hebner helped his own cause with a hit, two walks, and two runs scored. Austin Kasbarian and Todd Petersen both had a pair of hits, each with a double; Kasbarian drove in two runs and Petersen scored a run.
Robert Lombardo had a double, run batted in, and run scored; Will Heugi drove in a run and scored; Eugene Citron and Dylan Champagne both recorded a hit and scored runs, Gregg Brissette and Ben Harrison each had an RBI.
The baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 8, with a 2 pm visit to Staples of Westport. The Hawks return home on Monday, April 10, when Bethel comes to town for a 1 pm school vacation start time first pitch.
